Living in Annapolis Year-Round: A Local’s Take
Living in Annapolis Year-Round: A Local’s Take
Most people meet Annapolis in summer. They come for a weekend, walk City Dock with an ice cream cone, watch the sails glide past, and think, “I could live here.” What they don’t see is that the town is just as good in January as it is in July, and that’s the real reason people who move here rarely leave.
I’ve spent years helping buyers find their place on the Chesapeake, and here is what living in Annapolis looks like across all four seasons.
Spring: The Town Wakes Up
By April, the bay comes alive. Boats come out of winter storage, the docks fill with people varnishing and polishing, and outdoor patios open along Eastport and Historic Downtown. Dogwoods and cherry trees bloom along the brick sidewalks, and the whole town feels like it exhaled.
In May, Naval Academy Commissioning Week brings the Blue Angels overhead and thousands of white-capped graduates into the streets. Even after years here, it still gives me chills.
Summer: Life on the Water
Summer is what Annapolis is famous for, and it lives up to the reputation. Wednesday night sailboat races fill the harbor, and neighbors gather on docks and decks to watch. Weekends mean boating to a favorite waterfront restaurant, anchoring in a quiet creek, or simply sitting on your own pier with a cold drink as the sun drops over the Severn.
If you own waterfront property here, your backyard becomes your private resort.
Fall: Many Locals’ Favorite Season
Ask a longtime resident and many will say fall is the best-kept secret. The crowds thin, the air turns crisp, and the light over the water turns golden. October brings the Annapolis Boat Shows, which draw sailors and boating enthusiasts from around the world, but by November the pace softens and the town feels like it belongs to the people who live here.
This is also when you can sit by a fireplace at a downtown pub, walk a quiet shoreline with the dog, and enjoy a table at your favorite restaurant without a wait.
Winter: Quiet, Cozy, and Beautiful
Winter in Annapolis has a charm that surprises newcomers. The holidays are a highlight, with the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade turning the harbor into a floating light show and Midnight Madness bringing neighbors downtown for shopping, music, and cocoa. Historic buildings glow with lights, and the 18th-century streets feel like a postcard.
Then there are the quiet days: foggy mornings on the creek, long dinners with friends, and the sense of a small town that still knows its neighbors.
The Practical Side of the Good Life
Beyond the scenery, Annapolis works as a place to live full time:
- Location: You’re roughly 30 miles from both Baltimore and Washington, DC, with BWI Airport close by for easy travel.
- Dining and culture: A walkable downtown with independent restaurants, live music, galleries, and historic sites, all year long.
- Outdoor life: Sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and trails and parks in every direction.
- Community: As Maryland’s capital and home to the Naval Academy, Annapolis has a blend of history, civic energy, and genuine local pride.
- Variety of settings: From walkable Historic Downtown and Eastport to private waterfront estates along the Severn River and its creeks, there’s a lifestyle for nearly every kind of buyer.
Is Annapolis Right for You?
Annapolis suits people who want more than a house. It’s for those who want a daily rhythm shaped by the water, a community that shows up for one another, and a home that feels like a getaway on an ordinary Tuesday.
If you’re considering a move, it helps to experience the town beyond the summer postcard version. Spend a weekend here in the off-season. Walk the neighborhoods, visit the waterfront, and see how it feels when the tourists have gone home. In my experience, people who do that tend to fall even harder.
